Our Services
Sports Therapy
Starting with a thorough assessment, we will create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs, incorporating a variety of techniques. These may include sports massage, exercise rehabilitation, joint manipulations, acupuncture, and taping and strapping. Each method is designed to reduce pain and swelling, restore range of motion and strength, and help you return to your pre-injury state—or even exceed it.
With a team of highly skilled therapists, we offer treatments starting at £37 with our junior therapists and £47 with our senior therapist. Explore the details of our individual treatments below to find the best fit for your recovery journey.
Sports massage is a highly effective treatment used for centuries to reduce pain, swelling, and stress. It’s a powerful restorative tool and is integrated into many of our treatments here at Milton Keynes Sports Therapy.
Traditionally, sports massage was believed to work by manipulating tissues to improve joint function and range of motion. While this is partly true, recent research has shown that sports massage also works on a neurophysiological level. When performed correctly, it stimulates the release of chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin, which help muscles relax and modulate pain.
Sports massage isn’t just for athletes; it’s an excellent treatment for anyone dealing with muscle tightness, stress, or pain.
When it comes to rehabilitation, exercise is key. What you do off the couch is far more important than what happens on it. At Milton Keynes Sports Therapy, we provide you with the right tools to manage your recovery. Our goal is to guide you with the right exercises and loads to ensure you’re progressing effectively and safely, whether thats at home, at the gym or even outdoors!
We’re sports therapists, not superheroes (despite what some of our patients think). Our bodies are designed to heal themselves, but poor load management can hinder recovery. Rest is essential, but so is the right kind of movement. Too much or too little can slow down your recovery. Exercise, rest, and diet are the building blocks of muscle repair—no amount of massage or manual therapy can replace that.
Medical acupuncture, or dry needling, involves inserting small needles into the body to reduce pain and restore function. Originating from traditional acupuncture, it has been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine. Over the past 50 years, dry needling has gained acceptance in Western medicine, particularly for treating musculoskeletal issues.
The process works similarly to other manual therapies. The insertion of a needle into a muscle or trigger point releases chemicals that have pain-relieving and healing properties. However, if you’re not fond of needles, this may not be the treatment for you. In these cases, you may experience a release of hormones like cortisol, which are associated with stress and anxiety.
We use acupuncture to relieve muscle tightness, reduce pain, and enhance movement quality, often with immediate results!
Chiropractic and Osteopathic Manipulations
Spinal manipulations are widely used in chiropractic and osteopathy but are increasingly being adopted by sports therapists and physiotherapists with the right expertise. These techniques, once believed to “realign” joints, are now understood to help release pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing hormones.
The “crack” sound associated with these treatments is simply the release of gas that’s built up in the joint fluid, not a “joint going back into place.” At Milton Keynes Sports Therapy, we select treatments based on current science and your specific needs. Sometimes a gentle joint mobilisation is just as effective as a high-velocity thrust manipulation, with a lower risk of complications. Your therapist will always ensure you’re comfortable with any treatment before proceeding.
Injury and Biomechanical Assessment
A proper injury assessment is essential to ensure the correct diagnosis and treatment plan. Misdiagnoses can lead to months of unnecessary treatment and delayed recovery. Our team of fully qualified therapists uses advanced tools to assess your injury, measure muscle strength, and identify any discrepancies in joint range of motion.
If needed, we’ll refer you for further investigations, such as X-rays or MRIs, by providing a referral letter to your GP. Proper diagnosis and treatment are key to a faster, more effective recovery.
Taping and Strapping
We use a range of taping and strapping techniques to support your recovery and rehabilitation. Whether it’s rigid tape to provide stability for joint injuries or flexible kinesiology tape to aid muscle function and reduce discomfort, our approach is always tailored to your specific needs.
While research on the effectiveness of taping is mixed, many patients report significant benefits when it is part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Taping can help reduce pain, improve proprioception, support weak or injured areas, and promote better movement patterns during recovery. When combined with our other therapies, such as massage, acupuncture, and exercise-based rehabilitation, taping can play an important role in helping you return to activity safely and confidently.
Online Consultations
During the COVID-19 lockdown, we adapted to help our clients remotely. Now, online consultations allow us to provide guidance no matter where you are. You’ll begin with a video call with your therapist, where we’ll discuss your injury in detail and observe your functional movement patterns.
We’ll then create a bespoke rehabilitation plan and provide regular check-ins to ensure you’re on track with your recovery. While we can’t perform hands-on treatments virtually, we can help you find local professionals who can assist with soft tissue treatments if necessary.
